What this is
Most emoji sites are galleries: a wall of characters you scroll until something looks right. DBEmoji is built the other way round — as a database you look things up in. Each emoji carries its Unicode name, CLDR short name, codepoint, the Emoji and Unicode versions that introduced it, its Unicode group and subgroup, Unicode's CLDR keywords and, where GitHub defines one, its GitHub shortcode, alongside a plain-language meaning.
The facts come from Unicode
Codepoints, names, versions, groups and RGI status are derived from the Unicode Consortium's own source files by a script in this repository. They are copied verbatim, re-derived on every build, and checked by a validator that fails the build on any mismatch.
The interpretation is ours
Meanings, tone, common uses, misreadings, theme tags and our collections are editorial. They are labelled as DBEmoji editorial interpretation wherever they appear, so you always know which part of a page you can cite as the standard and which part is our reading.
Three ways to find an emoji
- Search by name, meaning, shortcode, Unicode codepoint, or by pasting the emoji itself.
- Browse the official Unicode categories, or our collections when a Unicode group is too large to scan.
- Follow a theme or mood tag across categories when the right emoji could come from anywhere.
